Berkshire Art Center is launching HeartSpace, a new artist residency designed around public participation, community connection, and collaborative art-making.
The inaugural resident will be multidisciplinary artist Wes Bruce, who will activate BAC’s Citizens’ Hall in Stockbridge and lead programming across the Berkshires beginning in May.
“This residency is about creating space for people to come together through creativity,” said Dr. Laura Thompson, executive director of Berkshire Art Center. “Wes’s work invites participation, reflection, and connection-we’re excited to welcome the community into that experience.”
Bruce’s residency will include a three-part workshop series called Lose Your Phone, Find Yourself, which asks teens and adults to step away from digital distraction and reconnect through sculpture, poetry, conversation, and immersive art-making.
The Drifting Studio
A central feature of the residency will be The Drifting Studio, Bruce’s traveling interactive art space. Installed at Citizens’ Hall and potentially traveling to other Berkshire locations, it will offer open-ended creative activities for all ages.
Bruce will also create an immersive installation opening May 30 at Citizens’ Hall. The work will transform interior and exterior spaces with painted surfaces, sculptural elements, and poetic interventions.
“I think of this work as an invitation-to slow down, notice, and create alongside one another,” Bruce said. “My hope is that people feel a sense of connection and ownership in what unfolds.”
The public opening will take place May 30 as part of BAC’s Art Palooza and will include the unveiling of the installation, the arrival of The Drifting Studio, and additional community activities. The installation will remain open during regular BAC hours.
The project is supported in part by the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation’s Artist Resource Trust, with additional support from the MillTown Foundation.
