For more than half a century, comedian Jerry Lewis demonstrated the power of media-driven philanthropy through his annual Labor Day telethon for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, blending entertainment, storytelling, and collective purpose to raise hundreds of millions of dollars.
A 24-Hour Broadcast for Recovery and Community
Inspired by that model, Vermont musician, journalist, viral content creator, and radio host Benjamin Lerner will celebrate 10 years of sobriety on June 13 with Benjamin Lerner’s CLEAN Jam, a 24-hour live broadcast marathon airing on WEQX 102.7 FM and streaming live on Facebook through Old Mill Road Recording. The event runs continuously from 3 p.m. June 13 through 3 p.m. June 14.
Benjamin Lerner’s CLEAN Jam will raise funds and awareness for The Wilson House and 1761 Arts, two nonprofits that played important roles in Lerner’s recovery journey.
The Wilson House, the birthplace and childhood home of Alcoholics Anonymous co-founder Bill W., serves as a gathering place in Southern Vermont for people in recovery. Meanwhile, 1761 Arts supports artist residencies and creative development, helping Lerner rediscover creativity and expression during his recovery.
At its core, CLEAN Jam is a 24-hour radio marathon, but the event will also reach audiences through a simultaneous Facebook livestream. The broadcast will feature music, live performances, conversations with celebrities and community leaders, listener call-ins, audience-requested song dedications, giveaways from local businesses, and discussions with individuals impacted by addiction.
For Lerner, the event carries deeply personal significance.
“I Should Be Dead Myself”
“I’ve lost dozens of friends to the opioid epidemic–and, in all honesty, I should be dead myself,” shares Benjamin, a former IV fentanyl, heroin, and crack cocaine addict. “Instead, I am living in long-term recovery with a profound sense of gratitude—not only for my sobriety, but for the opportunity to still be alive. This broadcast is a way of celebrating life, recovery, and the power of community—by showing up fully, minute by minute, hour by hour, for 24 consecutive hours. It’s my 10-year sobriety anniversary, and I don’t want to waste a minute of it.”
From Addiction to Advocacy
Born into a musical legacy as the great-grandson of composer Irving Berlin, Lerner first gained recognition as a classical piano prodigy before addiction derailed his life. Now sober since June 13, 2016, he has built a large following through his recovery-focused music and social media presence, amassing more than 500,000 followers and more than 500 million video views across platforms. He also hosts the weekly recovery-themed radio show CLEAN Jams on WEQX.
All proceeds from CLEAN Jam will benefit The Wilson House and 1761 Arts through The CJB Resident Artist Fund.
Listeners can tune in beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 13, on WEQX 102.7 FM or through a livestream on Lerner’s official Facebook page. A direct livestream link will also be posted at BenjaminLerner.com.
