June 11: Suite Ludwig:
Erika Ludwig (fiddle) and Jon Ahmadjian (guitar) met at the OldTone Festival in 2019 and quickly discovered a shared joy of playing traditional music non-traditionally. Their appreciation of a wide variety of music styles and a curiosity to discover new ways of playing old tunes settles down to basic Old-time in the presence of a banjo and a bass as played by Suite Ludwig band members Steve Margulis and Alexandra Ludwig. More often, Erika and Jon play as a duo, performing a rich landscape of traditional music with their own twist.
June 18: Empty Bottle Ramblers:
The Empty Bottle Ramblers play old-style dance music of Southwest Louisiana, featuring driving accordion two-steps and aching twin-fiddle waltzes sung in Cajun French. Tim Kness (accordion, vocals, fiddle) has longtime ties to this community as a dancer and musician; he’s also begun making a name for himself forging Cajun triangles in the old style. Danny Birnbaum (upright bass, t’fer), who likewise travels often to the Cajun parishes for visits and festivals, regularly lends his talents to old-time and country bands, as well. They first played together as EBR at the Augusta Heritage Center with Missy Roser (fiddle, vocals, accordion), who fell in love with this music after a misspent youth of string quartets and orchestras. Erica Weiss (guitar, vocals) has been learning from and playing with mentors from Louisiana for years and is well known as an old musician, caller, and dance instructor. Missy and Erica are also longtime members of legendary Cajun musician Jesse Lége’s band, Bayou Brew, appearing on the main stage of Festivals Acadiens et Créoles in Lafayette and festivals all over the Northeast.
June 25: Moonshine Holler:
MOONSHINE HOLLER is the old-time duet of Paula Bradley and Pete Killeen. Paula and Pete both live in the Berkshires and met at one of the many musical gatherings in the area, discovering their shared passion for tunes and songs from the golden age of recorded string band music – the 1920’s and 1930’s. With Pete on fiddle, mandolin, banjo or guitar and Paula on banjo, guitar, vocals, kazoo or feet, Moonshine Holler can only be described as “a two person music festival that captures the essence of American southern roots music.” Featuring ballads, blues and breakdowns on more musical instruments than they can juggle, and with some clogging to boot, Moonshine Holler is sometimes rowdy, sometimes reverent, always a ruckus!
