July 23: Riverbend Retreat

Performing a repertoire built of Oldtime, Celtic, folk standards and a few covers of contemporary Americana, RiverBend Retreat delights with simple and heartfelt arrangements. Melodies and harmonies are represented by Erika Ludwig (fiddle), Diane Barth (flute, recorder) and Steve Hyer (mandolin) and are supported by plucky rhythm from Patty Melville (banjo) and Lynne Chmurzynski (guitar). Each one of these Berkshire locals brings the experience of an artistic life (they are painters, jewelers, graphic artists and cultural junkies) to this microcosm of a music group. Their musical colors, textures and arrangements reflect the artistic depth of their other life endeavors.

July 30: South Street Swing

South Street Swing is a collaboration between vocalist, fiddler, and saxophonist Maggie McRae and jazz guitarist and vocalist Mark Phillips that seeks to revitalize great American songbook tunes as performed by Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra, and other classic jazz vocalists. Based in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, McRae and Phillips take inspiration from jazz duet ensembles like Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass, as well as contemporary artists like Diana Krall, to create memorable, foot-tapping musical experiences for both traditional and modern listeners.

August 13: Julia Gottlieb Trio

Julia Gottlieb is a jazz singer hailing from the Berkshire Hills of Massachusetts. Her musical influences range from Bach to Chet Baker to Bob Dylan. She has performed and recorded in both the LA and NYC jazz scenes. Julia is currently living and performing in the Berkshires.

“Julia Gottlieb has the sound and the substance of a talent with star potential. Her coolly insinuating sound calls up the laid-back style of Chris Connors as well as the sexily girlish rhythmic approach of Blossom Dearie. Add to that her own surprisingly mature gift for telling a musical story, whatever the style orgenre, and what you’ve got is something very special, indeed. — Don Heckman, LA Times
