Nellie McKay isn’t one to offer a saccharin inducement to romance. A singer-songwriter drawn to the tensions between surface and substance, she’s earned her reputation for unruly drolleries. After all, this is someone who recorded a glowing tribute to ingénue Doris Day, and later built a cabaret show around a poignant tribute to transgender jazz pianist Billy Tipton. (Other subjects of her wry inquiry include Rachel Carson and Joan Rivers.) NPR loves her—so will you.
