Samuel Harrison – Talk

April 15, 2021 @ 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm EDT

Pittsfield, MA – The Berkshire County Historical Society at Herman Melville’s Arrowhead is pleased to announce our April offerings. We have three exciting programs throughout the month of April. In addition to these programs, we are offering tours every Saturday, by appointment only. Due to COVID 19 restrictions, tour numbers and times will be limited and masks must be worn at all times. Call 413.442.1793 or email [email protected] to make a reservation.

Join Ann-Elizabeth Barnes, author of “The Reverend Samuel Harrison.” In honor of the birthday of Samuel Harrison, chaplain of the famed Massachusetts 54th Regiment, this presentation will illuminate this famed Abolitionist, Activist, and Chaplain of the Massachusetts 54th, the First Black Regiment Raised in the North to fight in the Civil War. Barnes highlights the unrecognized roles Blacks played in the events and outcome of the Civil War as well as the role the Black soldiers played in securing their own future, fighting with resolve, dedication, valor and dignity, while standing up for their right to the same pay as the white soldiers.
