“Maiden is simply magnificent storytelling and a must-see for all ages and genders.” — Associated Press

Tracy Edwards had a dream: to captain a yacht in a race around the world. This would be an immense challenge for anyone, but considering that Edwards was a 24-year-old cook working on charter boats at the time and that she specifically wanted to put together the very first all-female team, the dream seemed to border on the impossible.

Unsurprisingly, she was opposed on all sides: her male competitors thought an all-women crew would never make it, the chauvinistic yachting press took bets on her failure and potential sponsors rejected her, fearing they would die at sea and generate bad publicity. But Tracy refused to give up. She remortgaged her home and bought a secondhand boat, putting everything on the line to enter her team in the famed Whitbread Round the World race in 1989.

Featuring interviews with Edwards, her crew and members of the press and opposing teams, Maiden is a thrilling, empowering documentary that illustrates the pressures of being an outsider and the resilience of spirit needed to overcome it, all set against the backdrop of a pulse-pounding round-the-world race.

“It doesn’t get much more inspiring than the incredible story of Maiden. With stunning archival footage and interviews with the amazing Maiden crew … this stirring documentary recounts not just the feminist achievement, but triumph of the human spirit.” — Chicago Tribune
