Edith Wharton: A Genius for Gardens

Wednesday, August 28, 2019
10:00 am – 12 noon

“Decidedly, I’m a better landscape gardener than novelist,” wrote Pulitzer Prize-winning author Edith Wharton about her beloved gardens at The Mount. Wharton is recognized today for her contribution to American literature, but she was also a passionate landscape designer, developing the grounds of her Berkshire estate with the same elegance and lucidity she applied to her written work.

Edith Wharton: A Genius for Gardens will examine Wharton’s lifelong love of gardening, discuss her fascination with the European landscape design tradition, and trace the history and development of The Mount’s gardens and grounds from their inception to their recent restoration.

Anne Schuyler, is the Director of Visitor Services at The Mount. She leads the Visitors Services team, which encompasses a wide range of responsibilities from curating exhibits and historical interpretation to managing group tours. Her prior professional experience includes management positions in hospitality, customer service and training organizations. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations from the University of Virginia, and a Public History Certificate from Northeastern University.

Admission is $10 for OLLI at BCC members, and $15 for the general public and can be purchased online or by calling 413.236.2190. Admission is free to Berkshire Community College students and youth 17 and under.
