Art Omi Presents: What Happens When the Residency Ends

February 17, 2022 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm EST

Join us for a virtual conversation between Art Omi: Artists alumnus Remy Jungerman and past Art Omi: Artists critic-in-residence Charlotta Kotik entitled “What Happens When the Residency Ends.” Exploring their shared experience in Art Omi’s residency program, this discussion will provide an enriching perspective on how the residency has shaped and impacted their practices from the various perspectives of artist, curator, and critic. This event is free, but registration is required. Register here.

Remy Jungerman (1959) lives and works in Amsterdam and New York. He attended the Academy for Higher Arts and Cultural Studies in Paramaribo, Suriname, before moving to Amsterdam where he studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. In his work, Jungerman explores the intersection of pattern and symbol in Surinamese Maroon culture, the larger African diaspora, and 20th century Modernism. By placing fragments of Maroon textiles and other materials found in the African diaspora in direct contact with materials and imagery drawn from more “established” art traditions, Jungerman presents a peripheral vision that enriches our perspective on art history. Jungerman represented the Netherlands at the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019.

Charlotta Kotik, a native of Prague, has organized exhibitions by artists as diverse as Kerry James Marshall, John Cage, Louise Bourgeois, and Alyson Saar. From 1992 – 2007, she was Curator and Chair of the Contemporary Art Department at the Brooklyn Museum. There, she provided opportunities for artists such as Martin Puryear, Joseph Kosuth, and Ida Applebrook. In l993, as the United States commissioner for the Venice Biennale, she presented works by Louise Bourgeois. Presently, Ms. Kotik works as a writer, lecturer at the School of Visual Arts, and independent curator. In 2013, she was a Critic In Residence at Art OMI, and in 2021 she was critic emerita.
